Allotment project

Garden tools and donations are needed for an allotment project in Cambridge.

They will be used to develop an allotment run by staff and service users from Cambridgeshire and Peterborough NHS Foundation Trust (CPFT).

Mandy Peterson, a Peer Support Worker for CPFT said: “We urgently need new tools, seeds, netting and a water butt to expand our allotment so that more people can benefit from it. Working on the allotment is a great opportunity for service users to gain skills and experience in horticulture and is also part of their therapeutic experience.

“When we started this project in April we had to clear a lot of weeds before we could put any plants in. Now we are growing lots of different vegetables including pumpkins, courgettes, celery and potatoes. Together with service users we then cook the food and so far have enjoyed lots of stuffed marrows and rhubarb crumbles.”

Mandy is one of a number of peer support workers employed by the Trust. They are people with lived experience of mental illness who can give hope and support to service users.

People who work on the allotment, which is based close to the Grafton Centre in Cambridge, are either being treated at Mulberry 3, an adult in-patient unit in Fulbourn, or by the community mental health teams.

Donations can be dropped off directly to Mulberry 3 ward, Fulbourn Hospital, Fulbourn, Cambridge, CB21 5EF.
