Back to school: Top tips to lower your stress levels

The start of a new school year is an exciting time for many pupils.

But for other youngsters, the end of the six-week break can be an anxious time for them – and
their parents.

So what can be done by mums and dads to ensure that the return to school as stress-free as possible?

Dr Jo Holmes (pictured), Consultant Child and Adolescent Psychiatrist at Cambridgeshire and Peterborough NHS Foundation Trust, has suggested five simple tips for parents to follow.

Don’t panic: The calmer you are as a parent, the calmer your child will be.

Get organised: Nothing is worse than a frantic search for the book bag with only five minutes to go before you have to leave the house. Try to have everything ready the night before.

Get  back into a regular bedtime routine: After the freedom of the summer holidays and all those lovely long summer evenings, getting children back into a regular routine over what time they go to bed - and what time they wake - a few days before they go back to school is a struggle, but worth it.

Emphasise the positive: Remind your child of all the nice things they like about school, like seeing their friends again and playing games. Hopefully, your positive attitude to school will rub off.

The weekend will soon be here: Plan something nice for the weekend so that everyone has got something to look forward to.

Dr Holmes is  Consultant Child and Adolescent Psychiatrist  at The Croft Child and Family Unit, at CPFT’s Ida Darwin site, Cambridge. The Croft is the only unit in the UK offering specialist residential mental health treatment for children with their parents and siblings – called a “whole family approach”. The Croft provides assessment and treatment for children with complex developmental as well as psychiatric disorders, along with children presenting with severe emotional and behavioural problems.
