The Chair of Cambridgeshire and Peterborough NHS Foundation Trust is to celebrate a landmark birthday by taking on a gruelling charity challenge.

Julie Spence has decided to mark her 60th birthday by cycling from Land’s End to John O’Groats – and raising £60,000.

The former Chief Constable of Cambridgeshire will be riding the 1,000 miles in aid of children’s charity, Ormiston Families.

Julie, who became Chair of CPFT in May 2014, said: “With my 60th birthday looming I decided a needed a new challenge. Two years ago, I rode from London to Paris and I got a real sense of achievement of out that.

“So I’m getting back on my bike again and riding from Land’s End to John O’Groats in aid of Ormiston Families. It’s a really brilliant charity, and I’m hoping to raise £60,000. It’s a big challenge and a big target, but I’m confident I can do it.”

Ormiston Families is a leading charity for children, young people and families in the East of England. The organisation provides services that help children and young people manage the challenges they face and help them to improve their life chances.

Julie’s epic ride will start on June 13, but her training is already underway – just a few months after she was injured in a cycling accident in Cambridge.

Julie, who turns 60 in August, said: “Last year, I collided with someone on another bike as I was cycling to an appointment in Cambridge and I broke a bone in my hand.
“At the time I was on my old faithful push bike. For the Land’s End to John O’Groats ride, I’ve got a new racer with drop handlebars and properly fitted seat – and I’m hoping that cycling 1,000 miles from one end of the UK to the other is somewhat less eventful.”
