A clinician from Cambridgeshire and Peterborough NHS Foundation Trust has appeared in a new television programme aimed at helping people to lose weight.

Dr Hisham Ziauddeen featured in What’s The Right Diet For You? which is being shown on BBC2.

Dr Ziauddeen, an honorary consultant psychiatrist and neuroscientist who works for CPFT’s community mental health teams in south Cambridgeshire, said: “It’s the first time I have ever appeared in a television programme, and it was a really interesting experience.

“What we wanted to demonstrate in the programme was how our brains respond to food and perhaps more importantly, the imminent prospect of food, and how that is affected by our emotions.”

In What’s The Right Diet For You?, presenters Dr Chris van Tulleken and Professor Tanya Byron put 75 overweight volunteers on diets designed to tackle the specific reasons why they eat too much.

Depending on their hormones, genes, and attitudes towards food, they have split the volunteers into three groups: constant cravers, feasters and emotional eaters.

In the second programme of the series (shown on Tuesday, 12 January), Dr Ziauddeen, who also works for the University of Cambridge, was shown conducting an experiment with one volunteer Alison Vaughan (pictured above).

Dr Ziauddeen scanned 54-year-old Alison’s brain to show how she - and other emotional eaters like her - craved food when under severe stress or in a low mood.

Dr Ziauddeen told Alison who, along with the other volunteers, is trying to lose more than five per cent of her body weight: “There’s a part of your brain that is conditioned to responding that way to food, and has been doing that for years.”
