CPFT launches new online course to boost mental health
09 May 2016

People who want to improve their mental health can now take a new online programme being offered by Cambridgeshire and Peterborough NHS Foundation Trust.

The free treatment is from CPFT’s Psychological Wellbeing Service and is available to anyone over the age of 17 who is registered with a GP in Cambridgeshire or Peterborough.

The online system, SilverCloud, can help those experiencing stress, depression or a wide range of anxiety disorders.

Michelle Espley, senior therapist at the Psychological Wellbeing Service and lead for SilverCloud, said: “Mental ill health can affect one in four people, and this is another very effective way for people to get help and work towards recovery from their conditions.

“Although people can access appointments across Cambridgeshire and Peterborough if they wish to see someone from the Psychological Wellbeing Service, we realise there are still other people for whom those appointments are just not accessible or they don’t want to see someone face to face.

“Signing up for SilverCloud means they can go online at a time and place most convenient for them.”

People can refer themselves directly to the Psychological Wellbeing Service by using the form on the CPFT website – www.cpft.nhs.uk – or by calling 0300 300 0055.

Everyone who self-refers is spoken to by an advisor to ensure they get the right treatment for them. Anyone suitable for SilverCloud will be given a secure password to the online system.

SilverCloud is a cognitive behavioural therapy-based treatment which can help people overcome problems by changing the way they think and behave.

It is recommended that people take about eight weeks to complete each online course. Once a week, a therapist will be able to review each patient’s answers to the online modules. Patients can also leave comments, and the therapist can email them back.

Of those who have already completed a SilverCloud programme, seven out of 10 have reported a “significant improvement” in their wellbeing, while five out of 10 are declared “recovered” and require no further treatment.

Michelle said: “We believe this service could make a significant difference to the lives of many, many people across Cambridgeshire and Peterborough, and we really hope as many people as possible will take the chance to sign up.”

CPFT's Psychological Wellbeing Service was relaunched last year. People previously had to access treatment via their GP. But that was changed in September and anyone wishing to get help to overcome stress, anxiety and depression can refer straight to CPFT.

In the first seven months after the service relaunched, 12,000 people across Cambridgeshire and Peterborough entered treatment. Other treatments available include individual therapy, guided self-help, group sessions including training in Mindfulness, and a range of psychotherapy courses
