After hearing the news that a colleague had been diagnosed with cancer, staff from Cambridgeshire and Peterborough NHS Foundation Trust rallied round to join the fight against the disease by taking on a marathon by moonlight to fundraise for Cancer Research UK.

The team from the Trust’s Willow Ward, an 18-bed unit for older people with mental health needs, were inspired to support the cancer charity after health care assistant Elaine Castle was diagnosed earlier this year.

The intrepid walkers – Ramesh Subbiah, Samantha Chapelle, Heather Fricker-Amos, Richard Merritt, Laura Gore, Charlotte Watkins  - are preparing to don fluorescent  face paint and glow stick wristbands to tackle Cancer Research UK’s annual Shine Walk in London on Saturday 26, September.

The 26.2 mile walk starts at 10.15pm and can take up 14 hours to complete, with the organisers aiming to raise £5 million toward life-saving research at this year’s edition.

Elaine, who has worked for the Trust for 20 years, said: “I didn’t know what to say when I was told what the team was doing because of my illness – it’s absolutely amazing.

“I’ve worked for the Trust for a very long time but it’s always so nice to know how much your colleagues think of you and how much they care. It’s put a big smile on my face.

“I’m still recovering after receiving treatment but I will be up early on the morning of the walk, waiting by the phone to hear how they get on.”

Ramesh Subbiah, ward manager at Willow, organised the team’s fundraising effort and said that all of his colleagues have been helping to support each other to eat healthily and train hard in preparation for the walk.

He said: “We’ve all been willing each other on and we’ll continue to help each other on the night. The physiotherapists at Fulbourn Hospital have also been great, offering us advice and guidance so we’re in great condition. We want to cross the finish line together in under 11 hours.

“We were all very upset when we heard the news about Elaine and we wanted to do something to show her how much she means to us. All of our colleagues at CPFT make an invaluable contribution and it’s great that we can all come together in a show of support for such a great cause.”

The team are aiming to raise £1,500 between the five of them and would be grateful for any sponsorship. If you want to donate, visit https://www.justgiving.com/rameshsubbiah/
