George Sim joins Trust as search for next generation of NHS staff begins

CPFT tells apprentice - you're hired!
17 September 2015

Staff at Cambridgeshire and Peterborough NHS Foundation Trust have told the organisation’s first apprentice: you’re hired!

George Sim has become the first young person to start at the Trust since it launched a new Apprenticeship scheme.

The 20-year-old from Cambridge will be working in the library at the Trust’s Fulbourn Hospital site which is extensively used by staff to read the latest medical journals, research reports and scientific findings.

George, pictured above (left) with Ian Rennie, head of CPFT's library service, said: “This is a great opportunity for me and I am really looking forward to my time with CPFT.”

CPFT – the mental health and community care organisation – is offering apprenticeships in administration and healthcare support roles as it looks to build its workforce of the future.

Young people who are 16 and over can apply to become apprentices. They will work 37.5 hours per week on a 14-month fixed-term contract, receive a salary, holiday pay, and training.

As part of the programme, CPFT has linked up with colleges across Cambridgeshire and Peterborough. Representatives from the colleges regularly visit the apprentices and assess their training.

Amy Rothwell, apprenticeship officer for CPFT, said: “We think this is a great opportunity to find the NHS staff of the future. We know that young people face a huge range of possibilities from the age of 16 onwards, and we want to show to them that working for CPFT and the NHS is hugely rewarding.

“With a Trust like ours which has more than 3,000 members of staff, based in locations across Cambridgeshire and Peterborough, there’s an enormous variety of career opportunities open to them.”
