Charity launch new Cambridge Singing for Breathing group to help fight lung disease
26 April 2016

CPFT's respiratory team is supporting a new singing group being set up in Cambridge by the British Lung Foundation for anyone living with a lung condition.

The classes, which people can attend for a suggested donation of £3, will take place at 2.30 pm on Thursdays from 19th May in the Sunshine Room at Brown’s Field Youth and Community Centre, Green End Road, CB4 1RU. People can find out more and register by contacting Kay Barrett on 07845 726975 or emailing singingforbreathingcambridge@gmail.com.

As well as being a popular pastime, research has shown singing to help people living with lung conditions such as COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease) preserve their lung function and quality of life.

So far twenty-nine ‘BLF Singing’ groups have been set up by the BLF across the country. Each group leader, in addition to being a trained musician or music therapist, has been given additional training (including information on living with a lung condition) to ensure the classes are not just fun, but can make a positive difference to each singer’s lung health.

Kay Barrett, who is leading the singing group, said: “I’ve always enjoyed singing and one of the greatest pleasures in my work as a singing and voice teacher has been to introduce people to singing who haven’t sung before, or who thought they couldn’t sing. Research has shown that singing brings an amazing range of health benefits, and the BLF Singing for Breathing is specially designed to help people with chronic lung problems to breathe better and feel better. I’m really excited to be starting a group here in Cambridge. We’ll be improving the lung health of people in our area and having a great time in the process.”
