A host of young parents and their children who are supported by Cambridgeshire and Peterborough NHS Foundation Trust enjoyed a Christmas party celebration.

The parents are all helped by the Trust’s Family Nurse Partnership (FNP).

Thirty five children who attended the event at Westgate Church in Peterborough city centre were given presents which had been kindly donated by Heart Cambridgeshire, Spurgeons Children’s Charity, and the Peterborough Foodbank.

Kirstie Lynn, Service Manager for Nurse Led Children’s Services at CPFT, said: “The Christmas celebration is our favourite event of the year. We get to see all the children and their parents who the team have helped to support over the last year.”

Launched in 2011, FNP has helped close to 300 young parents aged 19 and under from across Peterborough who are having their first baby. As part of an intensive home-visiting programme, parents are assigned a family nurse from the team who works with them offering guidance, help and support from pregnancy until their baby is two-years-old.

Kirstie added: “It’s not easy being a parent, and it can be especially tough if you’re a young parent. Many of our parents – although definitely not all – don’t have a network of support that others can fall back on.

“It’s a very intensive programme and we work a lot on improving health outcomes in pregnancy, with advice about breast-feeding and stopping smoking.

“It’s about building trust so our clients know they can text and call the nurses with any health problems. We’re not on call 24-7, but they know they can get hold of us

“The Christmas party is a chance to catch up with them again and how they and their children are really thriving. It’s always emotional, but great fun.

“The Family Nurse Partnership has a lot of support and the presents we get from Heart, Sturgeons, and from the Peterborough Food Bank are just incredible.”

CPFT provides mental health and community health care to more than 100,000 per year across Cambridgeshire and Peterborough.
