Caroline and Joe Murphy celebrated their silver wedding anniversary by making a special presentation to staff and patients at Cambridgeshire and Peterborough NHS Foundation Trust.

The couple decided not to have gifts to mark their 25 years together and asked for donations from friends and family instead.

With the money they received they have now bought a water feature for the sensory garden at Oak 1 ward at the Cavell Centre, Bretton Gate, in Peterborough.

Caroline, who worked at the Cavell Centre for nearly three years until 2015, said: “We wanted to do something special and different for our 25th wedding anniversary so we took 40 people out for lunch, but instead of presents we asked for money which we said we were going to donate to two organisations, CPFT, and St Barnabus Hospice.

“Everyone was very generous and in the end we raised £260 which we have divided equally.”

With the money raised for CPFT, Caroline and Joe, who live in Bourne, Lincolnshire, bought a fountain for the sensory garden and some garden vouchers so staff can buy more plants.

CPFT provides mental health and community health services. Oak 1 ward is for women with acute mental health

Caroline said: “I really enjoyed my time working at the Cavell Centre and Oak 1 in particular was a place I got really attached to.

“We have a family connection to mental health. My brother, David, who died 33 years ago, had schizophrenia. I couldn’t save him, but if I can make a difference to one person’s life now, and make it a bit easier, it will make his death not such a waste.”

Dave Williamson, senior occupational therapist at the Cavell Centre, said: “We are really grateful for the donation from Caroline and Joe. The occupational therapy team have worked hard to improve the garden and make it a great space for patients and staff to enjoy, and the water feature and the vouchers for the plants will make it even nicer.”
