Greenhouse dream is complete

Emotional project to build greenhouse using 1,600 recycled bottles is given Mayoral seal of approval

Greenhouse dream is complete
16 May 2013

A greenhouse built using more than 1,500 recycled plastic bottles at the Darwin Nurseries in Cambridge has been officially opened.

The Darwin Nurseries is run by Cambridgeshire and Peterborough NHS Foundation Trust and is staffed by people with learning disabilities.

The greenhouse, which is being used to store plants and vegetables, has taken a year to construct and has been painstakingly built by a co-worker, Aidan Wheatcroft.

The bottles are encased in a wooden frame which was built by Robert Good, a volunteer at the nursery. Sadly, Robert died before the project was completed.

The Mayor of Cambridge, Councillor Sheila Stuart (pictured right with Aidan and Chrstine), performed the opening ceremony on Thursday, 16 May.

Christine Millar, Team Manager at Darwin Nurseries, said: “For Aidan, it has been a real labour of love. He put in an incredible amount of time and effort sourcing all the bottles and then fitting them all together.

“He was given incredible support by Robert who built the frame of the greenhouse.

Although Robert died before the project was completed, the finished greenhouse is a wonderful way to remember him.”

Opened in 1996, Darwin Nurseries is located at 5 Quy Water, Newmarket Road, Teversham, Cambridge, CB21 9AT.

A self-funding garden centre and farm shop, it enables adults with disabilities to gain work experience, develop personal skills and participate in social activities.

In a partnership with Huntingdonshire Regional College, co-workers can take vocational courses in horticulture and retail.

There are about 60 people who are currently registered with the project.

Darwin Nurseries produces hanging baskets and grows many different plants and flowers.
On the site there are greenhouses, animals including chickens and pigs, shrub areas, a pond, a quiet garden and a turf maze.

As well as selling vegetables and plants grown at the Darwin Nurseries, the large shop sells a large variety of local-sourced produce.
Darwin Nurseries offers vocational courses with Huntingdonshire Regional College in horticulture and retail.
