Players from a basketball club have given a makeover to the gymnasium at Peterborough and Cambridgeshire NHS Foundation Trust’s Cavell Centre.

Members of Vytis have repainted the markings of the basketball and badminton court at the gym in Bretton Gate, Peterborough.

The work required specialist paint and tools and the club undertook the work after receiving donations from three Peterborough councillors. John Shearman and Richard Ferris donated £200 while Ann Sylvester gave £400 from their Community Leadership Funds which aids community projects

Nora O’Shea, health activities facilitator for CPFT, which provides mental health and community care services, said: “We are really grateful to the members of Vytis and to the councillors.

“The gym isn’t just for our patients and staff, it’s also a community facility. Vytis has used it for some time and the hard work that has gone into this will benefit not only their members, but also everyone else who uses the facility.”

Vytis Basketball Club has men’s, women’s and children’s teams. The women’s team trains at CPFT’s Cavell Centre every Tuesday and Thursday from 8pm to 9.30pm.

Asta Kavaliauskaite, spokeswoman for the club, said: “Since we first started training at the Cavell Centre, it’s been really great meeting women from all different communities in Peterborough. It’s led to us going beyond just training to putting together a team and playing games against other sides.

“Most of all, it’s good fun and great for everyone’s fitness. We wanted to help improve the facilities so we approached the local councillors and they gave us some funding so we could re-paint the lines on the court. It’s a great facility and it’s nice that we can give something back and other people can enjoy the gym as much as we do.”
