On your marks: Invitation to inclusive sports day event
27 August 2014

Inspire Peterborough is inviting people to join them in Ferry Meadows from 11am until 4pm on the Thursday 4 September to celebrate their successful Sport England Funding Award at an exciting day of free accessible and inclusive fun, games and sporting activities. This is a special event for people with disabilities or long term health conditions, their families and carers and has been planned to coincide with the first National Accessible Britain Challenge (ABC) day.

Iain Crighton, President of Peterborough and Cambridgeshire Chamber of Commerce and Chair of Inspire Peterborough said: "We were thrilled earlier this year to hear of Inspire's successful bid to Sport England, bringing investment of over £277,000 to Peterborough.  This event on the 4 September launches our three-year programme.  With this grant and support from partners across the city, we aim to make a significant and positive impact to disability sport and recreational activities available in the city.  We will increase incrementally the numbers of people taking part in sport and leisure activities, and hopefully through their participation improve their mental, physical and social well-being”.

The event, supported by Nene Park Trust will be held in Ferry Meadows and all the activities will be centred around the new Lakeside Water Sports Centre. Disability sporting providers and groups across the city will be joining Inspire to ensure that this exciting event is a great success. Inspire will be showcasing accessible activities for people of all ages and abilities including hand-cycling, boccia, archery, abseiling, martial arts, bokwa, orienteering, guided tour around Sailability, cricket, boxing among others at the largest outdoor event of its type in Peterborough.  There will also be a health and well-being market place and guided walks will take place throughout the day.

Amongst a number of sporting celebrities joining the fun on the day will be Lord Chris Holmes of Richmond, MBE who has won 9 gold as well as other medals as a Paralympic Swimming Champion.  Lord Holmes, who was born in Peterborough and is Patron of Inspire Peterborough said: “This is a tremendous boost for the people of Peterborough, further enabling sporting opportunities across the city. More people, regardless of disability, will have the chance to try out and play sport and experience all the benefits that will bring.  It’s such a tangible example of the legacy flowing from the London 2012 Paralympic Games.”
