Generous shoppers have given more than £500 to an organisation which helps people who care for those with dementia.

Customers at Waitrose in Ely were given the chance to donate to the Dementia Carers’ Support Service (DCSS) after it was selected as part of its Community Matters scheme.

Shoppers were given a special green token at the checkout and were asked to choose between the DCSS and two other worthy causes.

Waitrose later converted the tokens in cash – and store bosses recently presented DCSS with a cheque for £587.

DCSS co-ordinator Fe Franklin said: “We are very grateful to Waitrose for this and overwhelmed by the support of the public. The money will be put towards arranging social events for our carers who deserve a treat for all the incredible work they do.”

The service, which is run by Cambridgeshire and Peterborough NHS Foundation Trust, has been praised for its innovative approach to helping carers. Carers are given a “buddy” who are ex-carers themselves and have first-hand experience and knowledge of how to look after someone with dementia.

The DCSS currently has some 23 volunteers who provide essential support to carers throughout Cambridgeshire.

Any carers who would like to receive support, or former carers who would like to become a volunteer, should email Fe Franklin via fe.franklin@cpft.nhs.uk or Sally Kitchen via sally.kitchin@cpft.nhs.uk or call 01353 652092.
