Mums urged to attend breast feeding event in Peterborough
20 June 2016

Health visitors from Cambridgeshire and Peterborough NHS Foundation Trust are part of an event to promote National Breastfeeding Celebration Week.

Organised in conjunction with Peterborough City Council and the National Childbirth Trust, it is taking place on the green outside Peterborough Cathedral on Friday, 24 June from 12.30pm to 2.30pm. Last year a similar event in Ferry Meadows attracted more than 70 people.

Angela Chalmers, infant feeding lead at CPFT, which provides community and mental health services, said she hoped the event will encourage more mothers to breastfeed and help end the stigma that some women encounter over breastfeeding in public.

Angela (pictured, centre) said: “We’re hoping as many mums and pregnant women – as well as all other family members – will come down and celebrate with us.

“The benefits of breastfeeding for a baby's healthy development are clear and can be traced right through to adult life, so we’ll have lots of tips and advice which will include everything from leaflets to knitted breasts which we use to demonstrate to mums how to feed their babies.

“We need to make sure that we provide services to support mums to breastfeed, but also to adopt a positive approach across Peterborough to make sure that mums are encouraged and welcomed to breastfeed their babies wherever they are. That’s something that all individuals, businesses and organisations should be making a conscious effort to work towards.”

National Breastfeeding Week, organised by Public Health England, is now in its 18th year and runs from Saturday, 18 June to Monday, 27 June.
