New CEO starts work at CPFT

Aidan Thomas takes up new role with a vow to further strengthen services

New CEO starts work at CPFT
02 September 2013

Aidan Thomas has started today (2 September) as the new Chief Executive of Cambridgeshire and Peterborough NHS Foundation Trust (CPFT).

Mr Thomas was formerly Chief Executive of Norfolk and Suffolk NHS Foundation Trust and has more than 30 years’ experience in the NHS and a long background in mental health. He has taken over from Dr Attila Vegh, who left the Trust in July.

Mr Thomas said: “I’m extremely excited to be joining CPFT. This organisation has seen an amazing turnaround during the past 18 months so it is an exciting opportunity to be able to build on these foundations. I believe I have the right skills and passion to lead CPFT on the next stage of its journey. I believe we can develop innovative services and develop strong relationships with our partners in health and social care. Above all, I want to build on the strengths of the Trust – its clinical staff and its commitment to a recovery model and user engagement.

“Even though I officially started today (2 September), I have spent the last month working alongside teams and services – working shifts on wards and attending a number of meetings – to find out how this organisation operates on the frontline. I wanted to see first hand the challenges faced by staff working in our services. I have been impressed with the way staff perform in often difficult circumstances and I have been inspired by their dedication and determination to continually improve the patient experience.

“I will be continuing to visit as many staff and key stakeholders as possible across Cambridgeshire and Peterborough in the next few months to gain an understanding of what we need to do to sustain the progress we have made in the past 18 months.

“My priority will be to develop the confidence and belief of staff that they can cope with change and continue to provide excellent services by building on the strengths of the Trust. It will also be important to develop closer relationships and understandings with Clinical Commissioning Groups, our local authorities and other stakeholders.

“I am committed to improving the care of our service users and carers. More and more people are using our services, while at the same time we are operating under increased financial restraints. But we can develop our services, and will continue to work with our commissioners to ensure this organisation remains a place that delivers high-quality services.”

Mr Thomas successfully led the merger of Norfolk and Waveney Mental Health NHS Foundation Trust and the Suffolk Mental Health Partnership NHS Trust 18 months ago. Prior to joining the then Norfolk and Waveney NHS FT in October 2009, Aidan was Chief Executive at West Essex Primary Care Trust. Aidan is a former HR Director and Director of Older Peoples services and Executive Director of Lambeth Mental Health and Community NHS Trust. In 1995 he joined Essex and Herts Community NHS Trust (which also provided Mental Health services) as Director of Operations, and was appointed Chief Executive of Epping Forest Primary Care Trust in April 2000.
