Autism expert Professor Simon Baron-Cohen will find out this evening if he been crowned winner of the People’s Portrait competition being run by The One Show.

Professor Baron-Cohen runs Cambridgeshire and Peterborough NHS Foundation Trust’s Cambridge Lifespan Asperger Syndrome Service (CLASS) clinic. He is also a trustee of the Autism Research Trust.

Professor Baron-Cohen (pictured right) is one of 12 candidates whose lives and achievements have been recognised by the BBC1 programme.

TV presenter Gabby Roslin said of him: “People like Simon are changing the world - and those are the people that should be applauded.”

The winner - who will be named tonight on The One Show - will be the subject of a jointly commissioned National Portrait Gallery and BBC portrait.

The other candidates are: actress Barbara Windsor, lawyer and human rights champion  Clive Stafford-Smith, scientist and campaigner  Professor Colin Blakemore, civil rights campaigner Dame Jocelyn Barrow, TV presenter and Childline founder Esther Rantzen, campaigner Dame Doreen Lawrence, singer Lulu, comedian and explorer Michael Palin, entrepreneur and philanthropist  Mo Ibrahim, athlete Dame Sarah Storey, and Falklands hero Simon Weston.
