Youngsters are to be urged to look after their teeth when a team of Peterborough school nurses host roadshows at city shopping centres.

The School Nursing Team, who work for Cambridgeshire and Peterborough NHS Foundation Trust, will be handing out 100 toothbrushes and tubes of toothpaste which have been donated by a number of city supermarkets.

The school nurses will be at the Queensgate Shopping Centre, in Peterborough city centre, on Tuesday 12 August, and at Serpentine Green on Tuesday, 19 August. Both events take place between 9am and 5pm.

Gemma Balnaves, School Nursing Sister, said: “Many people will have read the recent reports that NHS figures show that tooth decay is the most common reason for children in England to be admitted to hospital.

“We know it’s an ongoing issue in Peterborough, like it is everywhere else, so it really is part of our role to continue to stress the importance of oral health to children and parents. We are very grateful to the supermarkets for their help, and to Peterborough Business In The Community, which organised the donations.”

The school nursing team is responsible for the health screening of children who attend the city’s primary schools as well as providing support to Peterborough’s secondary school pupils.

As well as advice about dental care, at the roadshows the school nurses will be offering information about a range of other health issues from insect bites to sun care, healthy eating to the HPV vaccine, which is given to girls as part of the NHS childhood vaccination programme.

Gemma added: “Both events will be a great chance for us to talk to parents and carers as well as children and young people. Our team of school nurses has a wealth of knowledge, expertise and experience, and we pride ourselves on our kindness and compassion.

“We can give advice and information about all kinds of health issues and also give people more details about how to access other health services across Peterborough.”
