Tributes have been paid to Elizabeth Mitchell, former lead governor of Cambridgeshire and Peterborough NHS Foundation Trust, following her death.

Elizabeth (pictured), who continued to be a governor of the Trust after stepping down from her role as lead governor in May, died on Friday 8 June following a long illness.

Julie Spence, Chair of CPFT, said: "Elizabeth had been unwell for some time, but unusually for her this was a fight she couldn’t get the better of. She will be greatly missed by us all.

“Liz was passionate about the work of the Trust and I know she would want us to continue to be at the forefront of delivering compassionate care for people with mental health or long term conditions.

"She understood how the conditions can impact on the lives of individuals, far better than many of us ever will.

“It is without doubt that her persistence drove the advancement of carers being involved in our day-to-day work, and while she would say the Trust had done well in recent years, she was also the first to recognise that there is still some way to go.

“Liz will long be remembered at CPFT as a challenging but warm governor with a real passion for the Trust to be an open, thriving organisation.”

Elizabeth joined the Trust’s Council of Governors in July 2012 as a carer governor, representing the views of carers in Cambridgeshire and Peterborough.

She became lead governor in September 2013 and held the role until she stepped down earlier this year. She became a public governor for Cambridgeshire in May 2017, representing the views of members of the public in the county – a position she held until her passing.

Keith Grimwade, who succeeded Elizabeth at lead governor of CPFT, said: “Governors will remember her many kindnesses and her encouragement; and the occasional firm push in the right direction when we needed it.

“To paraphrase what Liz said to me the last time I met her, ‘You must all keep up the good work, there is a lot to do and it is really important’.”
