Good Practice Awards 2010 Minimize

Service and staff excellence in Cambridgeshire mental health services have been recognised at Cambridgeshire and Peterborough NHS Foundation Trust’s (CPFT) Good Practice Awards 2010.

The awards – judged by health professionals and users of CPFT services – were announced at CPFT’s annual public meeting at Hinchingbrooke Performing Arts Centre on 22 September. A booklet detailing all the winning projects can be downloaded right. The photo right shows Acting Chief Executive Jenny Raine (centre) with, left to right, Sharon Gilfoyle, Jo Smith, Emma Walker and Jan Robins.

Announcing the awards, Chair of CPFT Anne Campbell and Acting Chief Executive Jenny Raine congratulated all entrants. The winners were:

Best project or service award:
Dee Wall and Jan Robins for the Day Care Outreach Project. This innovative course for care home and day care staff responds to the recent Alzheimer Society report which showed that many residents have very low levels of activity. Dee and Jan have designed an activities programme for caring for people with dementia.

Outstanding innovation award:
Suzanne Cunningham for Releasing Time to Care. Releasing Time to Care (RTC) is part of the productive ward series, which is a national programme that focuses on the improvement of ward processes to help staff spend more time with service users, thus improving the safety and efficiency of the ward area. Suzanne has implemented RTC on Maple 1 and 2 wards at The Cavell Centre in Peterborough.

Outstanding team award:
Festival of Leadership team - Naomi Lockwood, Emma Walker and Jo Smith. The festival ran from 24 May to 16 July 2010 and featured a range of master classes designed to help delegates think creatively about delivering high-quality services in a rapidly changing world. So successful was the project that the team has been commissioned to run the festival again next year.

Outstanding individual award - runner up:
Shama Kanwar, Community Development Worker - the purpose of the Community Development Worker (CDW) role is to enable greater understanding and ownership of the issues facing Black and Minority Ethnic (BME) communities so that real improvement can take place in the commissioning and provision of mental health services for all service users, across all ages and all cultures. Shama was appointed less than a year ago and in that short period has made a significant impact, even more remarkable as she is the only CDW worker in CPFT.

Outstanding individual award - winner:
Sharon Gilfoyle, Peer Worker Project Manager - following exploratory visits to Recovery Innovations in Arizona, the CPFT Board agreed to pioneer a peer worker programme, and to make recovery the driver of all activities. Sharon was selected as the right person to lead the project and to inspire service users to think about becoming peer workers. This highly innovative project focuses on training, employing and supporting people with mental health lived experience as Peer Support Workers. The recovery-oriented project involves a radical shift that challenges stigma, promotes social inclusion, and will support cultural and practical change in the way we deliver services. Sharon’s work has included co-ordination of orientations, interviews, work experience placements, graduation ceremonies and post employment support.

Anne Campbell said: “We always receive an excellent standard of entries and this year was no exception. We want to make sure our awards recognise aspects of our work that are really important to us. The awards support and value innovation and development and is part of our commitment to being a learning organisation. CPFT recognises and values good practice and we hope this encourages innovation across CPFT and helps the organisation grow and develop.”
