Information for carers Minimize

The term carer can often be a difficult one for people to identify with, as for most people it is a natural role such as daughter or father, etc. Being a carer can be very rewarding and can make a huge difference to a person’s life, but it can mean dealing with difficult and sometimes stressful situations. Talking to someone who has experienced similar situation can provide a huge support to the carers.

Top tips for looking after yourself

Whilst you are preoccupied with the health and wellbeing of someone else, it can be easy to forget your own health. It is important that you keep yourself healthy and happy for their sake as much as your own. Here are some top tips to help you out:

  • Get regular exercise even if it’s just a brisk walk each day
  • Make sure you are getting enough sleep each night
  • Get in touch with local carer support groups
  • Maintain contact with friends and family
  • Organise your time – make lists
  • Take a break once in a while
  • Drink alcohol in moderation
  • Make sure you are eating well. For more information look at www.5aday.nhs.uk
  • Work out what is making you stressed or upset
  • Talk about your feelings, don’t bottle it up
  • Contact the Citizens' Advice bureau to see what benefits you are entitled to
  • Try to make time for yourself each day. Learn something new; take up a hobby or sport.

We know how difficult it can be sometimes. The most important thing is to ask for help if you need it.
