Community Development Worker

The role of the Community Development Worker is to work with Black Minority Ethnic and Refugees (BMER) in raising awareness of mental health and to support different communities to access services offered by CPFT and wider services offered by organisations such as Relate, Cruse Bereavement Care and Mind.

Within CPFT, Community Development Workers support mental health practitioners to engage effectively with service users where there are specific cultural needs and through supporting with staff learning and development.

In addition to working with practitioners and service users, the Community Development Team offers a number of programmes that can be accessed by BMER  groups and organisations working with them.

Current projects

• Mental health awareness programme
• Monthly Afghani dinner club
• Monthly mental wellbeing sessions at Bharat Hindu Samaj Temple
• Breaking Through Barriers interactive films
• Supporting research by accessing hard to reach groups
• Family work with BMER families
• Half-hour ‘toolbox talks’ for clinicians on working with BMER communities

• One-day dramatherapy workshops for Afghani unaccompanied minors
• Breaking Through Barriers conference
• Bereavement community drop in sessions
• Breaking Through Barriers interactive films
• Future Jobs Fund (accommodating six-month placements for young people who have been unemployed for more than six months. We had three people placed in the team.
