A welcome from Professor Ed Bullmore

We believe in the value of scientific research to improve understanding and treatment of mental health disorders. As part of a globally excellent research community in Cambridgeshire, Peterborough and the region, we have a large and diverse portfolio of active research studies.

We aim to translate research discoveries into better services, now and in the future, and welcome your engagement with our R&D programme throughout.

We set high standards of research conduct and we won't sponsor research studies unless we are sure they can be done safely, ethically, and will likely lead to some improvement in understanding or treatment of mental health disorders.

Cambridgeshire and Peterborough NHS Foundation Trust works closely with the University of Cambridge Department of Psychiatry and other partners and many of our staff are world leading experts in their field.

Our research is conducted to the highest standards of excellence and is informed by the views and priorities of our patients, their carers and clinical colleagues.  Participation in Trust research is a rewarding and positive experience, and is fully integrated within the caring, safe and excellent standard clinical care that CPFT provides.

Research is at the heart of CPFT’s PRIDE values. We believe in the benefits of research to improve patient care, and on average have 150 studies open at any one time – ranging from small student projects to psychological interventions, to highly complex clinical trials of new medicines.

Areas of research that we support cover a wide number of conditions, including dementia, bipolar disorder, depression, psychosis, schizophrenia and autism and we are looking for opportunities to increase research in community-based non-mental health areas.

Our study activity is conducted in a variety of environments – including clinical services, patients’ homes, care homes and the Windsor Research Unit (WRU), situated on the Fulbourn Hospital site.

CPFT works closely with the University of Cambridge’s Department of Psychiatry, Addenbrooke’s and other partners such as Anglia Ruskin University and the University of East Anglia. Cambridge’s Department of Psychiatry has been rated one of the UK’s nationally leading research groups in the three most recent Research Assessment Exercises, and it plays a leading role in the internationally excellent Cambridge Neuroscience community of researchers in neuroscience and mental health.

The Trust also hosts the region’s NIHR Collaboration for Leadership in Applied Health Research and Care (NIHR CLAHRC) which carries out applied health research that will have a direct impact on patient health and well-being.

Two teams in CPFT conduct research as part of the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) Clinical Research Network (CRN) Eastern.   https://www.nihr.ac.uk/nihr-in-your-area/eastern/  Based at the Windsor Research Unit, Fulbourn, one team supports Mental Health research, the other supports Dementia research.  Both teams can offer support to researchers and health professionals to deliver their NIHR adopted portfolio studies. For further information please contact your local team: CRNEasternmentalhealth@cpft.nhs.uk or DeNDRoN@cpft.nhs.uk.

The Research and Development (R&D) has an office at Addenbrooke’s Hospital on the Cambridge Biomedical Campus and also at Douglas House, Trumpington Road.  The R&D office is available to help throughout the research cycle from grant applications and ethics, through to R&D Approval for CPFT as a research site.
