Accessing the service - Health Care Professionals

Making a Referral

NCEDS are happy to be contacted by health and/or social care professionals who have any queries or concerns about a patient and/or want advice about how to make a referral.

We accept referrals for individuals who have a GP within Norfolk (excluding Great Yarmouth and Waveney). Unfortunately we do not accept self-referrals.

The NCEDS referral form requests specific information about eating disorder symptoms including eating behaviours, weight and physical investigations. For non-GP referrers, this may involve asking your patient to visit their GP. In order to triage your referral as quickly as possible, please ensure that requested details are provided as referrals with insufficient information will be declined. We ask that you include all patient contact details (e.g. address, phone, email) so that we can contact your patient as quickly as possible in order to arrange an initial assessment appointment.

Once received, NCEDS will triage all urgent referrals within 24 hours. If confirmed as urgent, NCEDS will contact the patient and offer them an assessment appointment within 4 working days. All routine referrals will be triaged within 5 working days. Once accepted as eligible for an assessment, NCEDS will attempt to call your patient within 48 hours to offer them an initial assessment appointment. If we cannot make contact by phone, NCEDS will send an appointment letter within a week. Referrals triaged as priority or routine will be offered an appointment within 14-28 days.

Please click here in order to access the NCEDS referral form or contact us on 0300 300 0142.

Transitions from other services

  • Other services, including other eating disorder services

If you are referring from another eating disorder service, please use the NCEDS referral form following the process outlined above and contact us to discuss the transition with an NCEDS clinician. Please arrange to send copies of any relevant reports (e.g. assessment, discharge reports) prior to assessment.

Patients will be required to register with a local GP once they re-locate to Norfolk although referrals will be accepted before GP registration.

If a patient is on CPA, NCEDS will ask that a discharge CPA is arranged by the treating team prior to transition.

Should you wish to contact a member of staff, please use the central contact information available here

  • Children and Adult Mental Health Services (CAMHS)

If you are referring from a CAMHS service, please make contact with NCEDS on 0300 300 0142 up to six months before the young person's 18th birthday in order to discuss the eligibility of the referral and start the transition process (if appropriate). If you would like to proceed to make a referral following discussion, please use the NCEDS referral form following the process above.

NCEDS has a designated Transition worker who will work with the CAMHS key worker throughout the transitional phase. The first transitions appointment will be a joint meeting arranged by your service in order to meet the patient and their family, contribute to the patient's personal transition goals and provide information about our service.

The patient will  then be offered an assessment appointment 3-4 weeks  before their 18th birthday. This will involve visiting our clinical (The Springs, Sprowston in Norwich) and meeting a member of the NCEDS team for 90 minutes. This will give us an opportunity to find out more about them and assess their current difficulties and enable them to become familiar with our clinic and the NCEDS team. Following their assessment, the patient will be invited to attend a follow-up meeting to discuss treatment options. If the patient is being taken on by NCEDS. a final transfer CPA meeting will be arranged and attended by all services involved to plan and finalise the discharge process. NCEDS will start delivering treatment after their 18th birthday.

The following flow chart provides a summary of the process when a patient is referred to NCEDS from CAMHS - find it here.
