Paediatric Neurology

Paediatric psychology provides psychological support to children, young people and their families who are under the care of the Paediatric Neurology Team at Addenbrooke’s Hospital. We offer psychological assessment and interventions for children with neurological conditions such as epilepsy, chronic headaches, tics, and neuromuscular conditions. The majority of families are seen on an outpatient basis and referrals are made for support with adjusting to a diagnosis, managing symptoms, adherence to treatment, anxiety management and support for low mood. We also provide neuropsychological assessments to explore a young person’s cognitive strengths and areas of need in order to inform further intervention. Psychological interventions are generally provided on a one to one basis although groups are also offered. We work closely with other members of the neurology team and regularly offer liaison with schools and other agencies as appropriate.

The psychologists also work with the counsellor practitioner and wider MDT to provide support for children and families when a child is admitted as an inpatient.

Neurofibromatosis Type 2

The psychologist in the NF2 service provides support to both children and adults who have a diagnosis of NF2. Psychology appointments take place at Addenbrooke’s Hospital and can be arranged during NF2 clinics or outside of these times and can be coordinated with other outpatient appointments if needed. The psychologist works closely with the NF2 Nurse Practitioners and wider MDT to offer support for patients and their families in coping with a diagnosis of NF2 in order to reduce distress and promote psychological well-being. The focus of psychology input depends on patient need but includes support with managing feelings and emotions following diagnosis, talking about how NF2 might impact on day-to-day life, work and relationships, preparing for procedures or coping with symptoms or changes to appearance. Where appropriate, the psychologist can also provide information about or refer to local services.
