The principles of recovery

The second key concept upon which our new pathways have been built is the concept of recovery (Guiding Statement on Recovery, National Institute for Mental Health 2005).  A recovery orientated system of care:

  • focuses on people rather than services

  • monitors outcomes rather than performance

  • emphasises strengths rather than deficits or dysfunctions

  • educates service providers, schools, employers, the media and the public to combat stigma

  • fosters collaboration between people who need support and the people who support them as an alternative to coercion

  • promotes autonomy through enabling and supporting self management and, as a result, decreases the need for people to rely on formal service and professional supports
