Cambridgshire and Peterborough NHS Foundation Trust's Windsor Research Unit is an outpatient clinical research unit and the base of the Cambridge Dementias and Neurodegeneration Research Network (DeNDRoN), part of the National Institute of Health Research (NIHR) Clinical Research Network (CRN).

About our team

Our team includes clinicians of various disciplines. We work closely with the CPFT Adult Mental Health Research Team and Research and Development department, Addenbrooke’s Hospital, the Cambridge Clinical Research Facility, the Wolfson Brain Institute and the University of Cambridge.

There are five Research Practitioners who work in the Trust, for the Mental Health part of the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) Clinical Research Network (CRN): Alison, Andy, Awula, Debra and Katherine. We work on high-quality clinical research projects taking place in the NHS, so that patients can benefit from new and better treatments. We help researchers to set-up and recruit to studies quickly and effectively, provide health professionals with research training and work with patients to ensure their needs are at the very centre of all research activity. We currently have a wide variety of studies running in the Trust from a health and wellbeing survey for adults who have severe mental ill health to a randomised controlled trial for children who have experienced multiple traumas.
We are always eager to here from staff who would like to get more involved in research projects and there are lots of ways you can help.

We’re based all over the region but our main office is at the Windsor Research Unit, Fulbourn Hospital and you’re welcome to pop in and see us or you can call us on 01223 219516.

What we do

Our team delivers and supports high quality ethically approved clinical research studies in dementia and other neurodegenerative conditions, physical, and mental health conditions. The team  is trained in a wide variety of clinical and other specialist skills such as dementia assessment.

We have a safe and welcoming environment for patients, carers and volunteers participating in research, with flexible clinical space including a clinic room, interview room, waiting area and sample handling room.

We have facilities for venepuncture, continuous or intermittent vital signs monitoring, physiological examination and other tests as required. We have a sample-handling room with a sample refrigerator, chemical storage, a temperature-controlled centrifuge, and ample storage for biological samples in -20 and -80 degree freezers.

We have undertaken a wide variety of observational studies as well as local, national and international clinical trials at phases 2 and 3 (smaller and larger-scale testing of drug on patients to assess efficacy and safety).

Where we can be found

The Windsor Research Unit is located at CPFT's Fulbourn Hospital site less than ten minutes away from the Cambridge Biomedical Campus.
