A Guide to Rough Times (GTRT) was originally created as a leaflet to help young people, their families and friends find information, help and support when times get rough. Since then it went online, and got bigger. Welcome to the new, updated and improved Guide to Rough Times.

What's making it rough?

Find out more from our topics where we try to tell it like it is. Find out if you've got a problem. You're aware of something and a bit concerned about it or you wouldn't be reading this! So investigate and decide whether you need to do something about it or not. 

It might just be you worrying about nothing much and there isn't anything wrong. Or there might be something you didn't realise until now. You might be unwell physically and that's making you feel bad emotionally. Your circumstances might be enough to drive you to distraction, or you might be having a hard time because of someone else. But if you have got a mental health problem there is no shame in recognising it and getting some help.

Decide how urgent it is 

It might be anything from "urgent", through "fairly serious", "bit of a pain", to "not bad but life would be better without it" (and it might get worse) but it will help you decide when to tackle it if you know how bad it is.

Figure out what to do including getting some help to decide, and how and where to get help including what happens if you do contact a helpline or website. Here's what you can find out about in GTRT:

What do they offer?

  • Information from the website
  • Many are national and can be contacted by email or phone
  • Help and information may be available 24/7.
  • Helplines with restricted hours
  • Sometimes they have leaflets you can download or have sent to you
  • There may be online chat or other interaction with other people like you
  • You may be able to help each other on some sites
  • You can talk to people who can't see you, and you don't have to say who you are.

  • Some services are local and you can just drop in or make an appointment
  • Some have groups you can join for support or just fun  
  • You might be able to volunteer to help.

You might not want anyone to know or see what you are looking at on the internet if you are looking for help, especially if they are the person who is giving you a hard time already and might get really nasty or even violent if they knew.

How to use the site and make it work for you

If you've never used a site like this before, anything in orange (except this word) is a link to something else if you click on it. If it opens in a new, separate window you can simply click "x" in the top right hand corner to close it again and go back to the original page. If it opens another page within GTRT or the CPFT site on top of the first page, you can use the "back" arrow in the top left to go back to the original page. Links are to organisations, web sites, information or other pages on this site.

Good news!

You don't have to read this like a book, a page at a time - you can pick out the bits you think are relevant to you by using the menu (or list) down the left hand side of the page , shortcut to specific parts of the site using the orange buttons on the header of each page, or try the  searches. You can browse A-Z, or search using specific words you enter. Find all the topics we deal with - you might be surprised what's there, and you can use the keywords in blue on the left to find where there is more about them on the site.

And if some of the terms don't mean a thing to you and you haven't got a clue what we're on about, try seeing what they mean in ordinary language in the glossary or the explanations for kids. A lot of the terms are things to do with mental health and the services provided and not things you will have come across in everyday life!  

If you get lost and forget where you were, you can see the trail of how you got to each page in the black bit below the header at the top of the page (eg, find help/ young people/ what's making it rough/bullying. This is called a "breadcrumb") and you can use that to go back to a previous step of your search by clicking on it.  

In the future you should be able to register if you want to and tell us a little bit about yourself which will help the site to offer you the things most relevant to you. You can also save and personalise your favourite bits.

What's so different about GTRT?

Yes, we know there are already a load of other brilliant sites out there, we've had a good hard look at lots of them who tell you where to get help or give you help themselves, and tried to learn from them, so this is what we hope makes us a bit different: 

  • First of all we're local and tell you about places you can actually go to get help face to face.
  • We've got together the biggest and best selection we can, and we hope to keep adding to them.
  • We're going to try to make sure you never come across a broken link, an email address which bounces, a site which is discontinued and a phone line which is disconnected because of our information being out of date.
  • CPFT are working on getting a fully personalised search so you can get more accurately targeted information by telling us a bit about yourself (in private of course)first.

Not for you just yet?

If things are pretty ok in your life and you don't think you need any help from GTRT right now, that's cool, but at least you know what there is and where to look if you need it later.
