Message from Tracy Dowling, Chief Executive  
Dear partners, members, friends and supporters

This has been an Easter like no other, and I want to take this opportunity to thank all our amazing staff – from our doctors, allied health professionals and nurses, to our administrators, volunteers and cleaners.

We are all being asked to work differently and more flexibly, and in incredibly challenging circumstances. Our staff have shown great tenacity and I am so proud and humbled to work alongside them.

Temporary changes to our services
Coronavirus (Covid-19) has made incredible demands on our staff and services to support the national response. This means we have had to prioritise our services to support people with severe and acute illness, for whom immediate treatment is necessary to prevent serious deterioration in their health and possible hospital admission.

Teams across the Trust, in line with national guidance, are having to make changes to what they can provide, which means some of our less-critical services have had to temporarily pause or change how they work. However, many of our essential services are continuing and, in some cases, ramping up to meet the increasing urgent demand.

Where there are service changes, we will review each patient on an individual basis and prioritise those who need our care the most. Our teams will be communicating directly to all patients who may be affected by these temporary changes and advising them where they can get support if needed.

To keep people safe, in line with social distancing guidance, face-to-face visits in the community will be only for those who require it. Others, where appropriate, will be supported virtually through video or telephone calls. A list of changes can be found here.

These tough decisions haven’t been made lightly, and I’d like to assure you that we are regularly reviewing the situation with our commissioners and partners to assess the impact, and make adjustments where needed.

Looking after our wellbeing
I know many of us may be feeling anxious and worried, so it’s important to do what we can to look after ourselves and each other, and know that sometimes “it’s ok not to be ok.”

We are working with system partners from across the NHS, local authorities and third sector to look at what more we can do together to support people who may be struggling, including launching new support services:

  • Lifeline, a mental health phoneline for people aged 18 and over living in Cambridgeshire and Peterborough has extended its operating hours to now be available everyday between 2pm and 11pm via freephone 0808 808 2121.
  • CPSL Mind (Cambridgeshire, Peterborough and South Lincolnshire) has launched an online wellbeing service for people over the age of 18 called Qwell, which provides a range of materials to support and assist people with their psychological wellbeing. This includes educational and self-help articles and peer-to-peer support via forums. Adults are also able to receive help from qualified counsellors via drop-in or scheduled online chat sessions.
  • Kooth provides free, safe and anonymous online support for children and young people.
  • Keep Your Head brings together all the mental health support available in Cambridgeshire and Peterborough.

The NHS has launched a national phone and text service to support NHS workers and we have also launched a number of initiatives to support our staff wellbeing.

Throughout all of this there has been an amazing sense of community spirit. We’ve been so touched by the amount of support we’ve received; from local businesses gifting food to staff and patients, to schools and community groups making visors and scrubs.

Our Head to Toe Charity appeal continues to support our staff and patients through this time, including funding spaces for ward staff who need to take a moment to support their wellbeing, and a food bank for patients in our crisis resolution home treatment team.

I will continue to regularly provide an update over the coming weeks and would welcome any feedback or suggestions for topics you would like to see addressed.
