David Edwards, the Chairman of Cambridgeshire and Peterborough NHS Foundation Trust (CPFT), has decided to step down from his post.

David (right) joined CPFT in August 2012 and helped lead the Trust through a major turnaround programme.

David, who has worked in healthcare for nearly 50 years, praised the Trust’s “wonderful staff and services” but said the demands of travelling from his home in Norwich were proving too much.

In a message to colleagues, he said: “CPFT is a great organisation with wonderful staff and services and has a positive future. However the travelling for me is just not sustainable.

“It has been a difficult decision but I have asked the Governors to start the process to replace me.  I will of course stay on whilst this happens, however I would like to finish around June.

“One of the great pleasures for me has been seeing services delivered so professionally across Cambridgeshire and Peterborough. Staff have faced considerable challenges and necessary organisational change and have reached out to work differently across the health and social care system.

“You have a great Board of Directors focussed on ensuring we provide the best services possible for our service users. There are challenges facing the NHS, however this has always been the case, certainly throughout the 47 years I have been involved in healthcare.”

Aidan Thomas, Chief Executive of CPFT, said: “Although I understand David’s reasons, I am personally very sad that he will be leaving the Trust.

“He’s done a fantastic job during his time with us and has helped lead us to where we are today by transforming the external relations the Trust has.

“I have felt very supported by him during my time at CPFT and he will be a very hard act to follow.”

Before joining CPFT, David chaired the health commissioning body NHS Great Yarmouth and Waveney. He previously served as a Non-Executive Director of the James Paget University Hospital Foundation Trust, Norfolk and set up and chaired the Norfolk and Suffolk Dementia Alliance.

David was Chief Executive of University Teaching Hospitals in Birmingham, Nottingham and Cardiff for more than 20 years and was awarded an OBE in 2005 for services to healthcare.

He will continue in his role as vice-chair of the University of East Anglia governing council and as a board member of University Campus Suffolk.
