Dr Mary-Ellen Lynall won the Core Psychiatric Trainee of the Year at the Royal College of Psychiatrists Awards on Monday 6 November 2017. Dr Lynall, a CPFT academic clinical fellow, has investigated the links between the immune system, stress and depression, developing protocols now being used in labs across the UK.
Mary-Ellen is currently working as a CT3 trainee psychiatrist in CPFT's adult liaison team, based at Addenbrooke’s hospital.
On receiving the award she said: "It was a real honour to receive the award and it’s very much down to the fantastic training, supportive colleagues and many opportunities I’ve had here at CPFT and the Department of Psychiatry. Thank you all! I’m looking forward to continuing my training and research here over the years to come."
The judges said: "She is an outstanding clinician and skilled medical educator with an exemplary record in teaching neuroscience to medical and natural science students."
Dr Lynall's research, supervised by Professor Ed Bullmore, director of research at CPFT, and Dr Menna Clatworthy, focuses on the role of the immune system of the three membranes that envelop the brain and spinal cord and the link between psychological stress and psychiatric disorders.
Mary-Ellen is also co-author of the textbook ‘Lecture Notes in Psychiatry’. She is a member of the RCPsych Wellcome/Gatsby Neuroscience Commission and Mary-Ellen teaches neurobiology to undergraduate medical students at Cambridge University.
