It couldn’t be easier to make a referral to CASUS.

CASUS accept referrals from all professionals, self referrals and those from parent/carers. Young people and parents/carers may prefer to read the Get Help page. Ideally referrals will be made on the CASUS referral form (see link below) but we will also accept referrals via Early Help Assessment.

We welcome “what if” telephone or email conversations to discuss potential referrals.

CASUS has a specialist interest in reaching those young people that are seen as hard to engage. Our aim is to offer intensive support and treatment to vulnerable young people with complex needs. In these cases substance misuse is part of a range of significant difficulties that may include mental health, sexual health, family relationships, housing, education etc. The team actively engages in multi-agency working to promote the resolution of these difficulties.

CASUS are happy to deliver services in community settings as well as young people’s homes, subject to risk assessment. Our normal working hours are Monday to Friday, 9am-5pm with out of hours appointments negotiable on an individual basis.

You may wish to complete a substance use screening (attached at the bottom of the page under further information tab) with the young person to aid your decision making or to support a referral. Guidance on our screening form can be found under further information tab

Referral criteria

We work with young people under 18 who are concerned about their substance use. Interventions will range from brief information and advice to longer term multi-modal treatment.

We also work with young people under 18 who are affected by someone else’s substance use, under our Stepping Stones project.

We have a limited service for 18 – 21 year olds who are particularly vulnerable and would benefit from seeing a young person’s service rather than be referred to adult services.

To access our service young people must be resident within the Cambridgeshire County Council area. Click here for a boundary map.

A word about consent

We only accept referrals with the consent of the young person. In our experience young people who feel they have been “forced” to see us are highly unlikely to benefit from the treatment offered. In fact the opposite is often true - it can move the young person even more into a position of not wanting to engage with help, and damage any future likelihood of them engaging with CASUS.

However, we are very happy to have “what if” conversations about young people who do not yet consent to a referral, and can support parents and professionals to talk to young people about us in ways that we have found will often encourage young people to at least give us a go. We can also support professionals to work with young people around substance use themselves – we call this “structured consultancy”.

Who we are and what we do

From April 2010, CASUS (previously Young Users) have been awarded the contract to work with young people, and their families, who have drug and alcohol concerns, issues or problems and live in Cambridgeshire. The service is commissioned by Public Health England.

CASUS are a specialist service of mental health nurses, social workers, substance misuse practitioners, and a consultant child and adolescent psychiatrist. Meet the team here.
