Specialist Clinical Psychology and Counselling

Including the Brainbow rehabilitation team for children with brain tumours.

Clinical psychology and counsellor practitioners work very closely together to offer psychological assessment and interventions for families where the child and young person has a diagnosis of cancer or a haematological condition such as aplastic anaemia. Clinical psychology is also part of the multi-disciplinary charity-funded Brainbow team that provides an assessment and intervention service for all children in the region with a brain tumour. This service offers a service from birth up to 16 years to children living in the east of England.

Based at Addenbrooke’s Hospital, Cambridge, counsellors and clinical psychologists provide a wide range of services including support with, adjusting to, and coping with, the diagnosis of cancer or other life-threatening and limiting haematological conditions. We offer support for all families from the point of diagnosis, throughout treatment, off treatment and end-of-life care. Our work includes individual and family therapy and sibling support. We work very closely with the wider medical and allied health professional teams. Clinical psychology also undertake neuropsychological assessments with many children to help explore their strengths and needs from a cognitive and memory perspective so that we can help support them after they have had treatment for cancer or other life limiting threatening conditions.

We understand how difficult it is for all the family to have a life threatening diagnosis. Families often spend a long periods of time on the ward, away from home and other family members. The counsellor practitioner is able to provide intensive support to families on the wards within our service.

We are committed to find new ways to offer support to families and to provide continuity of care throughout their illness and beyond.
