How this service can help you

Clinical health psychologists work in a range of acute and community hospital settings, specialising in areas of physical health medicine with patients who may also have co-morbid underlying psychological problems which may be impacting on their physical health condition.

Within Peterborough and Stamford there are some departments and services that have clinical psychologists as part of their team:

The Department of Pain Medicine, based at the Stamford site

This service consists of a multi-disciplinary team comprising medical consultants, clinical nurse specialists, physiotherapy, occupational therapy, clinical psychology and administrative staff. The aim is to help patients manage their chronic pain, prevent further disability, improve their fitness, functioning and their quality of life. This may involve medication and medical procedures but it will also involve encouraging patients to make changes in their lives through activity and exercise, education and relaxation strategies. 

The Specialist Palliative Care Team, based at the Peterborough City Hospital site

This service consists of a multi-disciplinary team comprising of medical consultants, clinical nurse specialists and clinical psychology based at the hospital and Macmillan nurses providing support within the community. The aim of the service is to improve quality of life with respect to both physical and psychological difficulties. The clinical psychologist’s role aims to support both patients and their family/carer to better cope with the psychological impact of the illness.

Supervision and training for psychological skills is offered by the clinical psychologist to staff working within the cancer services at Peterborough City Hospital to promote quality of patient care.

The clinical psychologist is also available to patients at the hospice in Peterborough; Sue Ryder Care Thorpe Hall Hospice.
