The community Parkinson’s service provides nurse-led care of people over the age of 18 with a diagnosis or Parkinson’s / Parkinsonism. 

The Parkinson’s nurses are able to support patients and carers registered with a GP in:

  • Huntingdon area
  • Ely and Fenland area
  • Peterborough area
  • Cambridge area

Parkinson’s Specialist Service can offer:

  • Advice, support and management of symptoms
  • Regular clinical consultations which can be over the telephone; at a local clinic or home visits
  • Proactive group sessions to promote healthy lifestyles including exercise and information/education sessions to help patients manage their condition
  • Integrated care to ensure the service is coordinated alongside other services and therapies to improve the management of Parkinson’s / Parkinsonism
  • Advice, support and training for health professionals involved in managing the condition.

These services are important in keeping clients in the community setting by providing crisis management to avoid unnecessary emergency admission, reduce length of stay if patient admitted and prevent unnecessary secondary care outpatient appointments. It also aims to improve concordance and adherence with appropriate medication regimes, which produces both clinical benefits and cost effectiveness. The services provide GPs with support and advice in dealing with the management of complex clients by providing direct access to these specialist services thereby minimising GP contacts as appropriate. The specialist nurses often act as the lead professional for patients with Parkinson’s.
