The Inpatients Mental Health Physiotherapy team provides specialist assessment and treatment for patients across adult and older adult mental health inpatient services, both at Fulbourn Hospital in Cambridge, and the Cavell Centre at Peterborough.

Our main aim is to take a holistic approach in supporting individuals with physical health needs as well as promoting the value of physical activity and exercise on both physical and mental health. We support with mobility, functional movement, specialised and general exercise, and healthy living for individuals with mental health conditions in a safe environment, in both an enjoyable and memorable way.

Fulbourn Hospital Cambridge:

Willow ward, Denbigh ward, Mulberry 1, Mulberry 2, Mulberry 3, Springbank ward, George Mackenzie House, and ward S3 at Addenbrookes

Cavell Centre, Peterborough- Maple 1, Maple 2, Acute Assessment Unit (AAU), Treatment Ward, Recovery Ward, Poplar (PICU)

Services we provide -

  • Physiotherapy Rehab Assessments - Including Injury, Stair Assessments, and any other specific physical conditions
  • To provide specialist knowledge and experience in planning specific individualised exercise/physical activity programmes for patients with particular mental health conditions, e.g. depression.

  • To provide specialist knowledge and advice in managing compulsive exercising behaviour associated with Eating Disorders, and provide guidance on the appropriate level of physical activity in relation to BMI and weight.

  • To offer education and advice in making healthy lifestyle choices, including exercise levels, diet, alcohol and smoking and the impact this has on mental health.

  • To facilitate social integration, through links with community services.

  • To provide education and advice to staff and other carers to increase awareness of the physical dimensions of mental illness.

  • To offer training and advice to patients, staff and carers on various aspects of physical health care including falls, mobility and walking aids, activity management and post-operative orthopaedic management.

  • To provide guidance and supervision to other members of staff who possess an exercise qualification to support the safe and effective delivery of exercise opportunities they provide.

  • To provide assessment and treatment for individuals suffering from physical problems associated with acute or chronic mental illness, e.g. breathing problems, muscular tension and related pain and drug induced physical problems, e.g. stiffness, altered posture and gait.
  • To maintain a teaching role, informing staff and students from the same, and other disciplines, of the role of physiotherapy in mental health and the services available.
