Depression affects 1 in 5 people living in the community and 2 in 5 living in care homes. If prevalence rates stay about the same, there will be approximately 3.5 million older people with symptoms of depression, nearly 1 million older people with dementia and an estimated 91,000 older people with schizophrenia. More attention to the needs of people growing older with severe and enduring mental health problems is needed.
