Clinical support staff

As a Healthcare Support Worker (HCSW), you will be a valued member of your team. Your focus will be on keeping patients at the centre of all we do, providing high quality care and living our Trust values - PRIDE.


As a result of the global Covid-19 pandemic, we are excited to announce an expansion of our existing Intermediate Care Team to support our discharge to assess model.  We are recruiting integrated care workers to provide care and therapy support in our teams across Cambridge & Peterborough working in the community within people’s homes.  Details can be found through this link.

You would work with an individual practitioner or a team, taking on tasks such as welcoming and preparing patients, explaining treatment and updating patient records.

Medical staffing/doctors

We are dedicated to providing high quality care with compassion. We deliver many of the NHS services that are provided outside of hospital and in the community, such as physical, mental health and specialist services. Together with global, national and local partners, we conduct high-quality and ground-breaking research into mental and physical health and support innovation to improve patient care. Our medical workforce are integral to our success as a Trust in providing high quality care.

We are a health and social care organisation and have clinical teams providing different services in inpatient, community and primary care settings. Services include: adult mental health, forensic and specialist mental health, Older people’s mental health, children’s mental health, hcildren’s community, older people and adult community, psecialist learning disability, primary care and liaison psychiatry, substance misuse, social care, and research and development.

We support a population of just under a million people and employ just over 4,000 staff. Our biggest bases are at the Cavell Centre, Peterborough, and Fulbourn Hospital, Cambridge, but our staff are based in more than 50 locations.

We have a medical staffing workforce of over 100 consultant psychiatrists and specialty doctors. They provide general and specialist services to service users of all ages across Cambridgeshire and Peterborough, in the community or an inpatient setting.

Our higher specialist training scheme for general adult psychiatry has approximately 14 trainees across a three year programme. Higher trainees will spend a year in acute psychiatry with 6 months on an acute adult ward in Cambridge or Peterborough, rotating with 6 months in the associated Crisis Resolution Home Treatment Team. A second year of higher training will be with a community-based mental health team in Cambridge, Huntingdon or Peterborough, providing medical input and leadership to a multidisciplinary community team.

The third year of training is spent in a specialist post. CPFT offers several different specialist experiences, including liaison psychiatry (leading to an endorsement), eating disorders, early intervention in psychosis, and personality disorders.  Specialist posts leading to endorsements are subject to competition in a Deanery-wide system allowing trainees to also apply for other experiences in nearby Trusts, including substance misuse and rehabilitation psychiatry.

Higher trainees have two sessions per week to pursue special clinical interests or research. We have many opportunities available including our adult ADHD clinic, other specialist clinics or research opportunities.  Many of our clinical supervisors have strong links with the University of Cambridge, with research that includes work on imaging studies, immunology, ADHD, biomarkers for depression and clozapine. We are also fortunate to have several academic higher trainees in ACL or ACF posts.

Peterborough and Cambridge have ongoing training opportunities including case conferences, academic lectures and opportunities to further develop competencies in teaching and training.  CPFT hosts the Deanery-funded Leading for Improvement (LEAP) leadership course to help higher trainees develop medical leadership competencies. We participate in the Chief Residents Leadership and Management Programme with Cambridge University Health Partners (CUHP) and the Judge Business School.

For experienced nursing staff there’s a real diversity of roles available, geographically across the Trust’s area as well as across the services we provide in mental ill health, physical ill health and learning disability.


A clinical psychologist provides psychological assessment and treatment for people within a range of community and in-patient settings. Clinical psychologists help people to manage their conditions through a variety of treatment approaches.

Assessments may be carried out through interviews, questionnaires and direct observation. Assessment may lead to therapy, counselling or advice.  Treatments include cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) and psychotherapy.

Counselling psychologists use talking therapies to help individuals and groups manage mental and emotional problems, as well as empowering people to make positive changes in their lives. Treatments are tailored to suit individual and group needs. They are suitable for people with more complex conditions, such as personality issues, psychosis, treatment resistant depression, complex trauma, developmental disorders and acquired deficits.

A person’s unique make up, including their history, personality, preference, cognitive ability, cultural identities and current presentation are taken into account when designing treatment plans.

Psychological Wellbeing Service

CPFT's Psychological Wellbeing Service is part of the Improving Access to Psychological Therapies (IAPT) services. Our aim is to make psychological therapies more accessible to people experiencing common mental health problems such as depression and anxiety. The psychological therapies offered are approved by the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE). 

This service is set up to help those aged 17 and over who are suffering from mild to moderate depression and anxiety disorders, including generalised anxiety, social anxiety, post traumatic stress, health anxiety, panic, phobia or obsessive compulsive disorder. 

Our service has over 200 staff including PWPs, High Intensity Therapists, Psychological Wellbeing Practitioners, Senior Clinicians, Service Managers and Administrators.

We pride ourselves on the support we offer to staff and provide an extensive programme of CPD for all our clinicians, together with weekly clinical supervision and monthly line management.

Our services are focused on delivering high quality therapy, with high recovery rates exceeding the national target of 50% and high levels of patient satisfaction.

We deliver a wide range of digital-based interventions including traditional telephone therapy, online guided self-help packages, and therapy via video conferencing software for individuals and groups. We also deliver a range of interventions to support people who are living with a long-term condition in conjunction with a range of physical health providers.

Allied Health Professionals (AHPs)

Our diverse range of services offers a wide variety of opportunities to members of the Allied Health Professions.  AHPs are key members of our healthcare teams, providing therapeutic help, clinical advice, and rehabilitation and treatment for our service users, who are all living with mental ill health, physical ill health or learning disabilities.

We are looking for staff who know that great care is all about making a difference to people’s lives. We want staff who are keen to share learning and experiences with colleagues and who want to work together to embrace best practice and embed continuous improvement and innovation. We offer all newly-qualified AHPs a preceptorship programme which supports their transition from newly-registered professional to competent practitioner. We will guide you through your preceptorship, helping you develop your skills, knowledge and practice and making sure you become an effective and confident allied health professional.

Returning to practice

We have supported several staff with existing AHP qualifications to return to the Health and Care Professions Council register. We have also employed people as therapy assistants, supporting them through their re-registration process.
