Electronic Prescription Service

What is the Electronic Prescription Service?

The Electronic Prescription Service, known as EPS, allows prescribers to send prescriptions electronically to a community pharmacy of the patient’s choice. This makes the prescribing and dispensing process more efficient and convenient for patients and staff.

Electronic Prescriptions

Where possible, CPFT outpatient prescriptions are now signed, sent and processed electronically.

When you get a prescription, it will be sent electronically to the pharmacy you have chosen. You can collect your medicines without having to hand in a paper prescription.

You have a choice of where you can collect your prescription:

  • You can use your existing nominated pharmacy,
  • Or you can nominate an alternative “one-off” pharmacy.

Cancelling or changing your usual choice of pharmacy

You can change or cancel your choice of usual pharmacy at any time. Simply speak to your GP or pharmacist, or update on your NHS App before you order your next prescription.

You should allow time for the update to take place to avoid your next prescription being sent to the wrong place.

What can I do if I’m unhappy with the process?

You should be informed your prescription is being sent electronically and you should be asked to give your consent before your choice of pharmacy is recorded. If you’re unhappy with your experience, you can complain to the CPFT team providing your care.

Who can see my prescriptions?

Electronic prescriptions are reliable, secure and confidential. Your electronic prescription will be seen by the NHS Service who provided your medication your chosen pharmacy, and by NHS prescription payment and fraud agencies.

If you have consented to share information between NHS Services your GP will also be able to see your prescribed medication.
