How our service can help you
The Adult Learning Disability Outpatient Service provides specialist assessment, consultation and treatment for adults with a learning disability living in Peterborough and Fenland.
Our specialist clinical team includes consultant psychiatrists, clinical psychologists and assistant psychologists, supported by administrative and medical secretarial staff. The team works collaboratively with individuals, carers, referrers and partner organisations to support person-centred assessment, formulation and intervention.

Who is eligible for the service?
- Aged 18 years or over.
- Registered with a GP in Peterborough or Fenland.
- Confirmed or suspected learning disability.
- Requires specialist mental health, psychiatry or clinical psychology assessment and intervention.
What Is a learning disability?
A learning disability is a reduced intellectual ability and difficulty with everyday activities that begins before adulthood and has a lasting effect on development. It is different from specific learning difficulties such as dyslexia or dyspraxia.

Waiting times
We aim to offer an initial assessment appointment within 18 weeks of receiving an accepted referral. Waiting times may vary depending on clinical priority, the information provided within the referral and service demand.
Preparing for your appointment
Bring a list of medications and relevant health information. You are welcome to bring a family member, carer or advocate. Please let us know if you require any reasonable adjustments.
Interpreter and communication support
We can provide interpreters, British Sign Language (BSL) support, easy-read information, large print and other reasonable adjustments where required.
Who we may not be able to support
The service may not be appropriate where the primary need is social care, a specific learning difficulty without a learning disability, equipment or adaptations, or where there is no evidence of a life-long learning disability.
Signposting to other support
Patients with a confirmed learning disability who require social care or support from other adult learning disability professions should be referred to adult social care at Peterborough City Council. This can be done in writing, by e-mail or by phone.

Referral Information

Referrals are accepted from General Practitioners (GPs), hospital consultants and internal CPFT services. We do not accept self-referrals.

What should be included?
- Relevant diagnosis and clinical history.
- Intellectual and adaptive functioning.
- Known risks or safeguarding concerns.
- Relevant reports and previous assessments.
What happens next?
- Referral received.
- Clinical triage and review.
- Eligibility assessment.
- Allocation to the most appropriate clinician.
- Referrer informed of the outcome.
How to cancel your appointment

If you are unable to attend your appointment, please let us know as soon as possible. Repeated non-attendance may result in your care being reviewed and your referrer being informed.

A carer is anyone, including children and adults who looks after a family member, partner or friend who needs help because of their illness, frailty, disability, a mental health problem or an addiction and cannot cope without their support. The care they give is unpaid.
