Trust mental health team receives Royal College’s seal of approval

Staff at Cambridgeshire and Peterborough NHS Foundation Trust who provide mental health care and treatment to patients admitted to Addenbrooke’s Hospital have been praised for their work.

The Liaison Psychiatry team, who work for CPFT and are based on the Cambridge Biomedical Campus, has been re-accredited by the Royal College of Psychiatrists following a rigorous review.

Team manager Claire Cafferkey (pictured fourth right alongside some of the team) said: “We are incredibly proud and I must thank everyone involved with the Liaison Psychiatry team.

“Every member of staff contributed and to be accredited again by the Royal College reflects their commitment to each other and to our patients.”

The Liaison Psychiatry team assesses and treats adults and older people admitted to Addenbrookes hospital. During the last year the team received nearly 6,000 referrals.

The Royal College’s review process — the Psychiatric Liaison Accreditation Network (PLAN) — is a quality improvement initiative for liaison mental health services throughout the UK.

Services wanting to earn accreditation must clearly demonstrate they are meeting more than 100 quality standards which focus on patient safety, care quality and staff wellbeing.

The Liaison Psychiatry team submitted a dossier of evidence before welcoming inspectors to see its work first-hand.

Claire said: “To be visited by the representatives from the Royal College was a great opportunity to speak to them directly about our work, how we care for patients, the plans we have for the future, and the feedback we receive.

“The team is supportive and reflective and operates 24 hours-a-day, seven days-a-week to provide rapid assessments to patients and work collaboratively with our acute hospital colleagues.

“This is the third time in a row we have achieved the accreditation standard and, as well as being a fantastic accolade for the team, we hope it provides assurance to those admitted to Addenbrooke’s Hospital that their mental health will be supported as much as their physical health.”

CPFT’s Liaison Psychiatry team based within Peterborough City Hospital was also reaccredited with the Royal College of Psychiatrists last summer.

CPFT provides community physical health services for older people and adults with long term conditions, mental health services, children community services in Peterborough and learning disability services. The Trust is also renowned for its research and development work and in June 2025, CPFT was awarded Teaching Partner status by the University of Cambridge.
