Poplar Ward (PICU)

How our service can help you

Poplar is a six-bed male psychiatric intensive care unit for adults suffering from mental health conditions who have been detained under the Mental Health Act.

The usual length of stay is between three to six weeks. We aim to work with patients to enable them to recover as quickly as possible. We we work with people and a range of professionals in mental health care so that patienrs are kept up-to-date and fully in the picture regarding their care. This includes the following:

  • One-to-one time with nurses
  • Psychoeducation
  • Medication
  • Occupational therapy
  • Brief psychological interventions
  • Advice and support for housing and finances

  • Business Hours/Visiting Hours: Visiting to the ward is by pre-arrangement with 12hrs notice. Visiting Hours: There is only one visitors room, so visitors must book a visiting time in advance. The visiting times are: Mon-Fri, 5.30pm- 6.30pm and 6.30pm-7.30pm; and at weekends and Bank Holidays 2.30pm-3.30pm, 3.30pm-4.30pm, 5.30pm-6.30pm, and 6.30pm-7.30pm (these times may be subject to change due to Covid-19 restrictions).

Referral Information

  • Consultant to consultant referral 9am-5pm, Monday to Friday. Out of hours referral to the on-call consultant.

Where to park and are there parking charges?

  • Parking at the front of Cavell Centre (Car park A), charges are in place. Blue badge holders can park directly in front of Cavell Centre in the provided disability parking area.

Is there access and support for patients and visitors with a disability?

  • Cavell Centre ground floor including PICU has disability access.

  • A carer is anyone, including children and adults who looks after a family member, partner or friend who needs help because of their illness, frailty, disability, a mental health problem or an addiction and cannot cope without their support. The care they give is unpaid.
